Applied philosophy   November 5th, 2009

I’ve become an applied philosopher. I feel this will help me deal with reality as it comes at me, as well as make for more interesting, and as a side effect, writable material. Currently I’m visiting my folks in Arizona. I think they really like it here and I’m having a pretty decent time. I went night frolfing two days ago and it was a real treat. Met interesting locals, and got some improvement advice on my throwing technique. Hopefully more to come! Stay classy internets.

Pants time   September 29th, 2009

There is something about putting on pants after a nice warm summer of shorts.  It is both exciting and depressing.  Mostly exciting because pants feel pretty bad ass when you put them on for the first time in a long time. The depression only comes from the knowledge that winter is on its way. It’s already getting cold out. The days are getting shorter. Soon life will become slow and simple.  Although they say variety is the spice of life I wonder if repetitious variety qualifies? Oh well it would be boring if it was the same outside all the time I will at least admit to that.

A blog in august   August 29th, 2009

Looked back and saw I hadn’t written here in over a month. While I mostly revamped my site to learn more about PHP and the like for my own personal gain of knowledge on the subject, I sort of thought it would give me the motivation to write more.  This however is not the case. Perhaps I am just more interested in saying and doing what I think rather than writing about it.  This isn’t exactly the attitude I want to have. I do like to write just the motivation isn’t intrinsically there for me. I’ll try and make it a habit and then maybe through prolific writing I will achieve what I have sought! If not maybe I could just whore myself out to one particular topic.  The topic would be; Electronic music in space with mushrooms.  Delightful.

Money in hard times   July 31st, 2009

Times are tough right now, and money is tight. I’ve only got a few things to say about my attitude towards money. One, I wish the world worked like the future years of star trek.  No money – just everyone working hard for the betterment of themselves and humankind. That or a decently fair barter system. I love to trade.

Two, money should be used for things you can’t do.  I can’t fix my car (yet) so I’ll happily shell out whatever it takes to get the job done.  However, if a piece of furniture breaks or some electronics, I’ll fix it. Little to no cost on things you can do yourself.  The Internet is amazing; it has nearly every type of do it yourself (DIY) repair manual for almost anything.

Three, money is not everything, but it is the only thing that will get you some things. (Its tough to trade for consumable goods) Not everyone is willing to barter; but you’d be surprised in these tough times how many people are willing to trade with the addition of cash.

tl;dr – i like startreks economy, only use money if you have to, trade + money = win large % of the time.

How to get good tech service   July 18th, 2009

Ok, you all may or may not know, but I’m somewhat of a computer wizard. I repair computers at a store, its fun but the customers could get a lot better service from us by following these few simple tips.

Number 1, more than likely you are there because you cannot fix the problem yourself, because of this you should not assume you know what the problem is. Calmly explain to the technician what your machine is or is not doing that is problematic. The more details you can gather about it the better and faster your repair will be. Blue screens? Strange error messages? Try and write down what they say.  If the problem is intermittent try and replicate it and take note of the steps you took to make the problem appear.

Number 2, more than likely they will give you an estimation on time.  Unless you’ve called around and found the store that will fix it right away, don’t immediately complain.  Often time the service is first come first serve, in this case you may have to wait. Although if this is the case more than likely there will be emergency rate service, but it will be costly.  If they give you an estimation of 2-3 days, don’t call the next day. Wait until the last estimated day and call them, but only if they haven’t called you. I know at our store as soon as we diagnose a machine we call the customer and tell them what the required repair is, and the cost. If the store you are at doesn’t do that, you might wanna find another store.

Number 3, BACK UP YOUR FKIN FILES!!!  Nine out ten times my customers don’t back up their data and the machines operating system needs to be reloaded, so we get to charge a nice price to back up data you could have just backed up yourself.  Even worse, if the hard drive fails or a partition collapses, “advanced data recovery” is costly. So just back up and you’ll look like a smart cookie.

And that’s it, its just that simple. So tl;dr review; Gather as much info about your problem as possible, be patient or bring money, and back up your important data.

Not that I’m a pro now, far from it, but I’ve definately learned a lot more than the 0 amount of knowledge I had before. Well, now im just goona do some polishing and upload all the comics (and name them!) then I’m going to pack more stuff and get ready for my move.

See you all in the near future.
